In June 2023, Singapore maker, Voro Motors launched the Emover Cruiser S. This sturdy framed e scooter now has extra miles of range stored in its boosted battery charge - plus extra smooth acceleration and ride quality.

Performance

Motor power and speed

Makers of Emove, Voro Motors, say its Cruiser S carries a single 1600 watt rear motor. This actually refers to peak power output - and the kind of grunt you need for smashing hill climbs and hitting top speed.

For typical ride performance you need for everyday commuting the Cruiser S still gives you 1000 watts of continuous motor power.

Acceleration

The Cruiser S sports a new, more natural, ergonomic design of thumb throttle, designed to give you a faster response. The previous Cruiser model featured a much less user-friendly "trigger-style" finger throttle.

Sine wave controller

A revamped sine wave controller produces a super-smooth acceleration. No jerks, jolts or shudders.

This is because a sine wave controller gives more precise control. It does this by providing better torque at low speeds. Torque is the ability to overcome a natural turning resistance around an axis. In this case, for your scooter wheels.

Battery Charge and Travel Distance

The Emove Cruiser was always built as a more long range electric scooter. With the revamped Cruiser S you're definitely getting more travel distance for your dollars.

Cruiser S packs a massive 52V 30Ah LG battery thatjust keeps pumping out the power for the longer rides.

On a single battery charge ( between 9 -12 hours) you can likely expect:

  • 100kms (62 miles) - Maximum range. You will need to select Speed Mode 1 - lowest speed.
  • 75kms (46 miles) - Average range - by selecting Speed Mode 2.

Travel distance will also depend on ground surface, riding conditions, weather and rider weight.

Tires and Shock Absorption

It's reassuring to see the Cruiser S retain its two large tires. Thoughtfully designed to give extra smooth rides on urban, flat ground routes. And a vital plus when an electric scooter is built for longer range.

The Cruiser S is equipped with:

  • 25.4cm (10in) by 8cm (3in) dual, pneumatic tires.

Some of the best electric scooters out there are fitted with pneumatic (air filled) tires. Here, the tires are also mostly hidden by huge front and rear fenders, so definitely no road debris will be kicking up and spoiling your ride.

The Cruiser S tire also seals directly against the scooter rim. It's aimed to give a stronger, puncture-resistant performance. Protection against the risk of a flat is also helped by self-healing tires.

Self-healing tires

The introduction of self healing tires on Cruiser S is a real handy addition to help keep you riding. The previous Cruiser model was fitted with inner tubes, and a reported risk of "pinch" flats amongst 50 per cent of its riders.

The inner tube has now been replaced on the Cruiser S. Instead, the inside surface of both tubeless tires are lined with a self-healing, gel 'slime'.

This means if the tire tread or wall is penetrated (up to around 25mm or 1 inch), the self-seal gel immediately fills up the puncture area.

A temporary plugging of a puncture, cut or tear is aimed to help you continue riding until you reach your destination. It's then recommended to replace the damaged tire before starting your next ride.

Dual suspension

You always need firm traction and stability when riding across different types of urban paving and tarmac. But cushioned on suspension not too stiff for soaking up the bumps, lumps, cracks and potholes.

Accompanying the Cruiser's chunky tires - for plumping up a creamy smooth, comfortable ride - the Cruiser S is equipped with large coil, dual suspension:

Brakes

Whatever your speed mode you need responsive brakes to stop your scooter every time. The Cruiser S provides you with:

  • Dual disc, Xtech 140 mm (5.5 in) semi-hydraulic brakes, front and rear.
  • Electronic braking on the rear wheel.

It's fairly unique to have hydraulic brakes fitted to an urban commuting scooter. And they're actually easier to use than cable-operated disc brakes.

A typical stopping distance is:

  • 3.5 metres (10-11 ft)- when riding at an average speed of 24 km/h (15 mph)

The Cruiser S does not come with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). A simple squeeze on on the hand-operated brake prevents any risk of locking up when making a sudden stop.

Lights

You need clear visibility at all times. For you and your scooter, and the ground ahead. Winter morning starts or late finishes can often mean you're scootering in reduced daylight. Or basically, night riding.

The Cruiser S gives you 5 lights in total.

  • 1 high-powered LED headlight - fixed low on the stem above the front fender.

The 4 button lights also act as turn signals, easily operated by a side-deck button and slider. It's important to note the brake lights operate independently (by illuminating, not flashing) of the head/tail lights and turn signals.

The Cruiser S sports some fairly wide 25 cm handlebars - definitely designed for a natural shoulder position, and firm yet comfortable, long rides. Plus, they're ergonomically shaped with wrap-round, rubber flat-palm, hand grips.

Comfort and ease on the deck is also built-in to Cruiser S. Here we have 58.7cms (23 in) x 19.5cms (7.7in) of ample deck space, covered in dual-column grip tape. Keeping you standing safe and comfortable while scootering over the long range.

Your safety is also helped by a deck rounded-off with every edge encased in a hard plastic, acting as a protective bumper.

Seat (optional)

Long range anxiety is not limited to whether your battery has enough charge left. If you want to sit a ride out, the Cruiser S is one of the few electric scooters that gives you the option to fit a seat.

Pre-drilled holes are located towards the rear of the deck where the seat plate can be attached.

Portability

Both handlebars, as well as the folding stem, can be neatly reduced to a very portable 127cms (4.1 ft) (L) x 25cms (0.8 ft) (W) x 41cms (1.3 ft) (H).

A single pin easily locks the stem when folded down for easier carrying. Then firmly locks the stem upright again for the next ride. Both folding mechanism and lock are also upgraded to black from previous silver.

The Mantis 8 is a mid-range, lightweight electric scooter from Kaabo. A brand founded in 2013 to make commuter scooters for everyday, urban travel.

Packing a single 800 watt motor, a 40 km (25 mile) range and chunky wheels - could it be one of the best electric scooter alternatives to the Emove Cruiser S?

Performance

Motor power and Speed

Mantis 8 is powered by single 800 watt ( continuous) of rear motor power. (Compared to the Emove Cruiser with 1000 watts and Mantis 8 Pro with 2 x 500 watt motors).

Although this is less power than the Emove Cruiser, you get a max speed of 40 km/h (25 mph). Which means Mantis 8 is 7km/h ( 8mph) faster than Emove Cruiser S. And exactly at the legal top speed limit for electric scooters on the road, in all states, except Colorado.

Speed Modes

Mantis 8 offers 2 speed modes via the P-settings. A different mode should be selected to obtain the best power and range needed for each specific ride.

  • ECO mode - maximises your range by reducing torque and top speed
  • TURBO mode - enables unrestricted motor power

Acceleration

Mantis 8 is built for the urban commute and smooth, comfortable rides across town. You'll find this electric scooter prefers to be sure and steady when getting up to speed. Which is ideal for most daily riders on typical roads, pedestrian footpaths and walkways.

On a typical 10 degree incline - Mantis 8 can cover 60 meters (200 feet) in just under 15 seconds. It's important to remember that rider weight will affect speed, as well as time taken.

Battery and Range

Mantis 8 carries a lithium-ion 48v 13Ah battery, capable of covering the average urban commute on mostly flat paving and concrete.

On a single charge of 6.5 hours you can achieve a maximum range of up to 40-50 km (25-30 miles), depending on speed settings, road conditions and rider weight.

Kaabo have also included a smart battery management system (BMS), which helps extend battery life, by preventing the risks of overcharging, over-discharging, and short-circuits.

Tires

Kaabo have fitted Mantis 8 with:

  • 20cm (8in) x 8cm (3in) pneumatic ( air-filled), tubeless tires.

Most riders consider an electric scooter with air-filled tires gives a smoother, cushioned ride. Better able to absorb those annoying cracks, bumps, lumps and potholes you suddenly see in the ground ahead.

Air-filled tires are highly durable. If you forget to keep your tires fully inflated at their proper pressure* you won't have the fiddly hassle of replacing a "pinched" inner tube if you do get a flat.

Brakes

Mantis 8 comes with EABS 120mm, front and rear, mechanical disc brakes. Which brings this scooter to a halt at 3.2 meters (10.5 feet). Almost identical to the stopping distance of Emove Cruiser S.

It should be noted the average stopping distance of an electric scooter riding over urban flat ground at 24 km/h (15 mph) is 6-12 meters (20 to 40 feet).

  • Rear brake is activated by left hand lever
  • Front brake is activated by right hand lever

For seamless, smooth stops the rear brake should be gently squeezed first followed immediately by front brake .

Additional help to responsive stopping is given by regenerative braking, which uses extra energy created and stored in the battery.

Lights

Illumination on the Mantis 8 is provided by LED deck lights and turn lights.

This means you have:

Button deck lights - which also function as turn signals

  • Front of scooter deck - white lights flash on the side of the scooter deck to indicate turning left or right.
  • Rear of scooter deck - red lights also flash to indicate turning left or right.
  • A rear brake light either side of the rear deck flashes when either hand brake is pressed.

Your scooter has extra visibility with blue LED lighting running beneath the length of each side of the deck.

Mantis 8 deck design measures an ample 47cm (18.5 in) by 21cm (8.3in), a couple of inches shorter than the Emove Cruiser. A tough-grip, textured rubber with solid, raised markings cover the entire surface, which gives you a reassuring foothold.

A deck to ground clearance of 4.6 inches is higher than the average 3 inches for electric scooters, which really helps to avoid nasty curb scrapes and jolts.

Apollo Ghost

Canadian manufacturer, Apollo, launched the Ghost in 2020 to great acclaim. A couple of upgrades later - in 2022, and in 2023 with a new Mach 1 controller and app connectivity - Apollo Ghost is still a powerful spirit!

Apollo may call it an e scooter for the "experts". But for a growing community of freedom-loving riders - we'll be checking out Unagi Voyager next - Ghost can bring speed thrills and fun scootering to precinct, road routes and parklands.

Motor power

In 2022, Apollo replaced Ghost's previous two 800 watt motors with a pair of 1000 watt motors, producing a top speed of 55km/h (34 mph). Which also made it possible for riders to push the needle even further - to 60km/h (37mph) max speed on flat ground, adventure trails.

Speed Modes

To make efficient use of battery charge and motor power, depending on your settings for each ride, Ghost also offers 3 capped speed modes:

  • Mode 1: 24 km/h (15 mph) - often called ECO mode, that's mostly used for extending range.
  • Mode 2: 40 km/h (25 mph) - max legal speed limit on most state roads on your urban commute.
  • Mode 3: 55 km/h (34 mph) - when you need that Ghost-like fix of "fast and fun".

Acceleration

Hitting 0-24 km/h (15 mph) in 2.4 seconds means accelerating with the Ghost definitely leaves a few other urban scooters trailing in the dust.

It's close brand buddy, Apollo City Pro, is pipped at 2.9 seconds, while Emove Cruiser only makes it in 4 secs, but still ahead of Mantis 8 managing 5 seconds.

Cruise Control

Cruise control is also available with Apollo Ghost. As with many other electric scooters, its often listed as an Additional Feature, accessed via pre-programmed P-Settings on a LCD display finger throttle. The Ghost has a QS-S4 throttle.

Hill Climbs

Apollo Ghost is a mean scootering machine on beating out those typical 10 degree urban gradients.

It can also reach an average speed of over 24 km/h (15 mph) on 20 degree inclines, covering 200 feet to the top in under 9 seconds.

That's 6 seconds faster over the same distance than the Kaabo Mantis 8. It also beats out Emove Cruiser (12 seconds at around 18 km/h (11 mph).

Battery Charge and Travel Distance

Apollo Ghost is loaded with a 52V 18.2Ah lithium-ion battery, pumping out 947Wh. On a single charge of around 12 hours this translates to:

Max range of:

  • Nearly 64 kms (40 miles)

Average range of:

  • 40 kms ( 25 miles)

It's actually around 5 kms (3miles) or so further than the previous Apollo Ghost 2021 version. So definitely qualifies as a long range electric scooter.

A really useful bonus is the dual charging ports. This means you can cut your battery charging time to around 6 hours with two chargers.

Tires

A typical urban electric scooter tends to be fitted with 8in diameter tires. Going for that extra cushion, and a super smooth ride, Apollo Ghost matches Emove Cruiser S by also sporting:

  • 25.4cm (10in) by 8cm (3in) dual, pneumatic (air-less)tires.

A further refinement is the upgrade to a stronger aluminum alloy split rims*

*Split rims - are bolted together for quick separation, and easy tire change.

Lights

Here Apollo Ghost definitely looks to be haunting the Kaabo Mantis 8. Both share almost identical lighting.

  • Two headlights - flush-mounted either side of the deck front
  • Two rear red brake lights - flush-mounted either side of the deck rear
  • Blue LED strips - running entire underside of the deck

The ambient blue illumination casts a supernatural glow that's hard to miss by pedestrians and other road users.

But like the Mantis 8, the addition of a high-mounted headlight, would greatly help with seeing the ground ahead. Particularly, riding in the dark, or in reduced daylight hours.

You can see immediately Apollo have put a lot of thought into designing the handlebars.

A full-chunky rubber grip, ergonomically moulded into a paddle shape, keeps your palms and fingertips in firm cockpit control.

And it's definitely a full-on handlebar.

Apollo has introduced a 2023 upgrade kit for the Ghost 2022 including:

  • Mach 1 controller - to amp up motor speed.
  • Power RBS - use of regenerative braking instead of mechanical brakes, for improved stopping power and battery recharging during use.

Build Quality

In 2022, Apollo increased the thickness and rigidity of the stem to prevent any risk of stem wobble.

The revamped hard angular look is made from billet aluminum, that's extruded from a solid, one-piece, metal block. This is stronger than cast aluminum, which is made by pouring molten metal into a shaped mold.

Deck

Apollo has designed plenty of standing room on its 47cm (18.5 in) x 23cm (9 in) deck. With grip tape running the entire length left and right hand sides.

The deck also has 13 cm (5.2 in) ground clearance - which is higher than the Mantis 8, and well above the more standard 3 inches on most electric scooters.

Portability

Tipping the scales at 29 kgs (64 lbs), this Ghost could be seen as a phantom weight. It's actually 2kgs more than Emove Cruiser and 5kgs more than the Mantis 8.

On the plus side, the folding mechanism is a vise-grip clamp-lock and lever that really does fold the stem down in seconds. And crucially, the Ghost has folding handlebars, which is a less awkward carry than some other scooters.

A safety latch securely locks the stem into place while being carried.

Riding modes

A choice of riding modes is always a must-have. Capping your speed saves battery charge, and extends range. Voyager offers 3 speed mode settings:

Speed Mode 1 - 14 km/h (9 mph): Enjoy the longer ride at a leisurely pace in energy-saving eco-mode.

Speed Mode 2 - 19 km/h (12 mph): Smoother riding for a less hectic urban commute. A "balanced" throttle on-board helps to maintain an even pace.

Speed Mode 3 - 27 km/h (17 mph): A fun run, top speed rather than an insane performance at full throttle.

Hill Climbs

In 2023, Unagi upgraded its dual motors to deliver an exciting:

  • 1000 watts MAX peak output - up from the Model One's 800 watts max.
  • 32 Nm MAX improved torque - compared to 26 Nm (Model One).

The extra heavy-duty torque means Voyager can make light work of those 10-15 degree hill climbs. Beating out the average 10 degree urban gradient in around 12 seconds at nearly 17.7 km/h (11 mph). And it's a similar performance to Emove Cruiser.

Battery Charge and Travel Distance

Unagi have also given Voyager more range with a boosted:

  • 42V, 3A charge output lithium-ion battery of 360Wh / 10 Ah - compared to 33.6V, 2A 259Wh / 9Ah (Model One).

"Double the Range & Half the Charge Time"

Without adding to scooter weight the larger battery gives Voyager:

  • 12 to 25 mile range on a single charge - nearly double the 7 to 12-mile range of Model One.
  • 3 hours charging time - almost half the 5 hours for Model One.

On-board system monitoring prevents any overheating risk for a low maintenance and longer battery life.

Tires

The size and type of tire fitted to an electric scooter can vary, according to intended use. Big, wide and chunky tires can help you deal with off-road and rougher terrain. But tight maneuvering on urban flat paving, on and off curbs, and fast turns can be very different.

Unagi have fitted Voyager with easy to control tires:

  • 7.5 inch (19 cm) (Diameter) x 1.6 in ( 4.0 cm) (Width)
  • Honeycomb, puncture-proof, solid rubber.

Honeycomb tires

Unagi are known for championing the use of honeycomb (or "air pocket") tires. They're a combination of air filled and solid tires.

A system of ribbed air pockets ("honeycombs") right around the edge of the wheel give:

  • Greater structural integrity - less tire distortion during tight maneuvres and offers better suspension than solid tires.
  • Lower rolling resistance.
  • Extended range - more battery charge stored.
  • Reduced risk of a flat.

Voyager is equipped with dual electronic brakes. And Unagi also includea rear fender foot brake for a solid, responsive assist to full stops. So no nasty wheel locks when suddenly braking on a typical, flat urban route.

Average 'on-road' stopping distances:

  • 7.7 m (25 feet) - electronic brakes only.

Visibility at all times! You need to "always see and be seen". Whether you're on an early morning / late evening commute, on a dull, overcast day - and especially if you're riding at night,

Not all electric scooters have a bright enough headlight installed. Or all the lights operating in a way you might expect, such as a brake light not flashing. Both Mantis 8 and Apollo Ghost do not have a headlight at all.

Unagi has fitted Voyager with :
